What would clear my Pentium 4 run at 50%?

System CPU Use is 50% beside nothing else taking any percentage. New XP, verbs drive, no viruses... except perchance BIOS. Never came across this earlier and don't know exactly how long it's been this track.

The task mediator should show you which process is using that much of your CPU. From there you can integer out whether it's a virus or not.
Could be a virus, trojan or worm. Or not! It could just be a corrupted OS directory, process swapping, XP Indexing or something else. If you have Indexing on, move about to Services and turn it off.
Have you looked within the task principal (CTRL-ALT-DEL, then Task Manager, consequently Processes)? Look to see if there are any processes that do not look comfortable to you. What about updates? Is your computer surrounded by the middle of updating Windows, maybe?
It's ordinary, windows itself, would use that much.
